Stick to Your Guns
by DPM on 09/10/12Stick to your guns... You've always heard this saying (or at least I grew up hearing it). But whatever saying you heard from whatever region you came from, it always meant the same. If you believe in something, and you believe that it is the right thing to do, then continue on this path even if it is not always the easiest or most favorable of choices.
The other night I was offered a slot to play at a local event called the Deck of Arts in Downtown Albany, GA. (If you haven't gone and checked out this event yet, do yourself a favor and go.) When I arrived, originality and art was in the air. I decided at that moment that I was going to play all originals, all night. No cover songs!! Not that I don't like some cover songs, but it was an art festival so I wanted to show off my art form and my creativity. I stepped up on stage and played my 45 minute set and when it was done I thought to myself... Self, they hated you!
Oddly enough though, when I left the stage this stranger (soon to be friend) came up and shook my hand and said that he appreciated what I had just done. This then led to a conversation where he invited me to play at another larger festival. (Shameless promotion I know but I'll be playing at the Ray Charles Music Festival in Albany, GA on October 27.) If I had succumb to the pressure of playing what I know would have entertained the masses, I may have missed out on this larger opportunity.
So in leaving, I remind you to always remember why you're doing something and stay the course. Or in other words.... Stick to your guns.
